Sumitomo-led consortium agrees deal for NYSE-listed Air Lease

A group of investors led by Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation and including one of the world’s largest lessors SMBC Aviation Capital as well as private equity giant Apollo and alternative asset manager Brookfield (who bought a majority stake in aviation finance business Castlelake in 2024) have reached a definitive agreement to acquire the New York Stock Exchange-listed Air Lease Corporation in an all cash deal. The deal values Air Lease at approximately $7.4 billion and upon closing will see the company renamed Sumisho Air Lease.

Insurance settlements boost Russia-exposed aircraft ABS deals

Global credit ratings agency KBRA's latest report analyses the impact of Russian 'stranded' assets and subsequent insurance payments on aircraft-backed ABS transactions. It shows that of the 28 KBRA-rated transactions, 10 have been repaid in full while of the 18 remaining transaction 11 have received insurance-related proceeds. Meanwhile, lessor settlements with insurers continue to be announced.

AIP partnership to focus on JOLCO opportunities

AIP Capital are teaming up with BeYoke Capital to target Japanese investors with JOL and JOLCO opportunities. The move is one of a number of recent developments in the JOLCO space, including GA Telesis' first JOLCO, that show the attractions this market has for aircraft lessors, financiers and airlines in helping to diversify financing options.

Take private of Air Lease will reshape the aircraft leasing sector

The latest major consolidation in the aircraft leasing sector will immediately give greater scale to SMBC Aviation Capital, as it will act as servicer to newly established Sumisho Air Lease. With the lessor also set to acquire Air Lease's attractive open orderbook it will see its future growth pipeline swell and accelerate while also bypassing the current long lead times associated with new aircraft orders with delivery slots for the popular A320 and 737 family aircraft now available in the 2030s.


Aircraft Orders

Macquarie AirFinance orders 30 MAXs

Macquarie AirFinance is the latest lessor to build out its orderbook with a 30 aircraft deal with Boeing. This is the lessor's second direct order from Boeing having ordered 40 737 MAXs in 2024 and brings its order backlog to above one hundred aircraft as part of its long term growth strategy. Meanwhile, Boeing also agreed significant deals with WestJet and Korean Air.
