Freight sector enjoys strong upsurge in activity as revenues ‘exceed expectations’
With the upsurge in passenger demand proving to be even slower than aviation industry participants had hoped, for domestic as well as international services, the sector has increasingly been turning its attention to one area of significant opportunity – freight services. Here the collapse in passenger services has meant a sharp curtailment in belly capacity availability and a consequent upsurge in yields. Reflecting this dynamic shift there has been considerable activity in cargo on a number of fronts. GECAS Cargo has effectively doubled up its orders with Boeing for the narrowbody 737-800BCF programme, AEI has reported ‘explosive growth’ and is expanding its conversion capacity, dedicated cargo carriers are coming in with record Q2 earnings and established passenger carriers such as American Airlines and BA are increasingly focussed on putting their expensive aircraft assets to good use in coming months.
